Deviant Criminology

There are those that find the open discourse around true crime inherently deviant as it strays from the normal accepted social topics of civilized conversation. However, we embrace the idea that studying deviancy can teach us valuable lessons and our podcast seeks to utilize our backgrounds in the criminal justice system to provide an intriguing and educational experience.

Deviant; straying or deviating from an accepted norm.

Criminology; the scientific study of crime and criminals.

Deviation Into True Crime

Our journey started when Heather and Rachel agreed to guest lecture for Dr. Weaver (Richard) for a criminal justice ethics course he was teaching. Rachel presented first about her experiences as a boutique and tribal lawyer and a couple of weeks later, Heather presented on her own experiences as a lawyer and prosecutor. Though all three had known each other for a while, they had not shared much about their respective experiences in criminal justice. After the two presented, Richard had a realization; that not only were these presentations great for the students, but that when coupled with his previous work in law enforcement, they made a damn fine group to talk about true crime. This was a great opportunity for these three friends and professionals to turn conversations often seen as deviant in “polite society” into something creative and purposeful while giving them the chance to revisit their passions, knowledge, and experiences.
